Designer Of The Day: Cynthia Rednall

Designer Bio:
Cynthia was a girl leading a typical lifestyle growing up on the movie sets in Los Angeles around very talented and famous people like Clint Eastwood on a daily basis. She was abruptly transformed into a frontier woman at the tender age of 16 when her parents moved to Alaska. She later took a government job at the Gates of the on the Arctic National Park on the edge of the Koyukuk River, where she built a house of visqueen that she decked out with Persian rugs and the finest satin sheets...embracing the best of both worlds.
Upon returning to her roots in L.A., she visited Palm Springs Ca. were she settled, fulfilling her need for the combination of nature and elegance. While in the area she played a major role in the construction and design of a project from the ground breaking to the interior decorating and landscaping on a 10,600 sq. ft. six acre estate.
Now back in L.A., she has based the production and marketing of her accessory line. She commutes back and forth to work on her lodge, a landmark property high on a summit with a view of Mt. McKinley aka Denali. She is turning it into a romantic retreat to be filled with large European antique furnishings and beautiful fabrics. It will be intriguingly different from the Alaskan lodge norm. With an innate sense of design, her accessories pieces must also have the distinction of being totally unique, all of which, are of course one of a kind.

1. What inspired you to get into accessories design?
Feeling the need to wear an accessory different form the rest, very earthy, each piece with it's own expression.. I wanted something totally unique and yet classically chic....so I began creating my own.

2. Where did you go to school and what was your major?
As a child and a young woman, I attended both public and private schools in the Los Angeles County School district. I was privileged to be exposed to schools of dance as well as being instructed in good horsemanship....I also attended school in Alaska and some college courses in Dallas, Texas.....My major was drama and later some classes in real estate marketing.

3. Describe your philosophy about fashion?

My own fashion sense has always been towards the more natural and subtle lines, with comfort in movement. As far as accessories, I feel you can really make a full fashion statement with an outstanding accessory, even if you are wearing nearly nothing at all. A simple backdrop draws focus to center stage..center stage requires strategic planning. Strategic planning can result in a star billing! The perfect accessory will be awarded with being in a league all it's own.

4. What words of wisdom can you give to aspiring designers?

If you feel it, express it. To have your visions become tactile is a very satisfying and gratifying experience....Go for it...don't just think...it do it!!

5. Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?

I have always been both exhilarated and soothed by nature. Forever absorbing and appreciating the way the colors, shapes and textures compliment each other on our planet earth and in our universe. I love being deep in a silent rain forest or standing on the shore feeling the earth tremble from the pounding surf. Firework shows, wild roller coaster rides and the Aurora Borealis fascinate me. I get a feeling of something far beyond and yet so close in the total calmness of the pitch black night being lit by the glowing moon. Watching magical shimmering liquid mercury flow or standing at the mouth of a huge river as it empties itself into an ocean of unfathomable proportion, has left me in awe. From all these life's experiences, I gather my visions for my designs.

6. What is a typical day for an accessories designer like yourself?

I have surrounded myself with very beautiful, graceful, elegant, stylish and playful Afghan Hounds. Usually there is a long walk with these wonderful creatures that are called 'sighthounds'. We together take in as many sights and sounds as we can on our journeys. When they go down for their naps, very much like that of a cat, the jewellery is physically produced. There are intervals of stopping and starting on the pieces, on going..late into the night. The Afghan Hounds eat when I eat. They are social and loving creatures and very much want to be a part of the day. Never pushy, just included, if possible. Otherwise very dignified and patient while they wait for the work to be finished. Many times more than one piece will be worked on in the same day..We have very long, full days.

7. Which accessories designers have been important points of reference for you?
Mikimoto..For combining the natural smooth simplicity of the pearl with the stunning brilliance of gems.

8. If you had the opportunity to design an accessory for one person who would it be?
I have always admired the late Princess Grace of Monaco's sense of style and that truly would have been an honor...In today's world I would like to design something for the actress Jessica Alba. I see a natural, classy, ethnic type of beauty in her, while at the same time having a playful quality of sweetness and innocence with a true love of everyday life.

9. Can you tell me about your collection?
My jewellery collection is a lot about contrasts and yet, at the same time similarity's. The impact of vibrant colors partnered with soft earth tones. The usually faceted, sharply cut stones falling upon the obviously very smooth, warm and powerful presence of the fossilized materials.....All of which have been gathered from their natural state on different parts of this earth, after thousands of years in the making and then being familied into a newer upbeat fashion statement. Many of the pendant sets (the 'sets' include matching earrings) are two sided (earrings as well). One a rather elegant side and the other with a more relaxed casual feel, so all you have to do is take the one set... simply flip the pendant and you are good to go...day or night. They have been on quite a journey to be worn by only you and admired by many....For they are all, of course, as are you, one of a kind.

10. Where can we find your collection?
My pieces were to be found in Kaviar n Kind on Sunset in Beverly Hills and at Laura M jewellery in Malibu. I had also placed them in Santa Barbara on State St. That was four years ago.... I stopped producing the jewellery to design and help work on very large sculptures of Granite, wood, ice and bronze with a master sculptor. I just started again putting my jewellery designs into a reality, in the last two months. I will be concentrating on some more formal pieces with more fluidity and movement, consisting of multiple smaller pieces, as well as continuing with the more solitary pendants. I am preparing to put them back on the market in Malibu and possibly Beverly Hills. In the meantime the pieces can be found on:

Stylist Of The Week: Alexis Knox Question Responses!

Artistspringboard.com was very excited to feature our first stylist of the week Alexis Knox this past Tuesday. Alexis was on hand to answer all of your style and career questions for the week. On behalf of artistspringboard.com and Alexis we hope you have a very stylish holiday season!

Question: What’s the best hot trend to wear this winter?

Alexis: I'm a big fan of fake fur...I love big fake fur hats as they can be really glamorous. But as soon as the fur begins to look dodgy-chuck it out!

Question: I'm a big fan of your work! Can you give me some advice on what to do when I graduate?

Alexis: Many thanks! As all creative industries are, fashion is equally competitive. My best advice would be to get your CV together outlining any previous experience you've had, but keep it brief, and apply for internships and assistant roles

Meet Alexis Knox: Our First Fashion Stylist Of The Week!

"Meet Alexis, the first artistspringboard.com stylist extraordinaire. Alexis is a Celebrity Fashion Stylist and as well as working for big clients like The Clothes Show, BBC, ITV, Diesel, Firertrap and Channel 4. Alexis is the Fashion Editor for Notion Magazine, a super hip bi-monthly globally distributed fashion and music magazine.

Get to know Alexis a little better through our brief interview with the Style Queen.

1. Please tell artistspringboard.com readers a little bit about your story and how you got into fashion styling?
I graduated 4 years ago, after studying Illustration in an art school in Oxfordshire. I knew i needed to make a swift move to East London where i decided to pimp mysef around in as many creative fields as possible. I held exhibitions of my art works, continued with my successful vintage clothing business i had been running part time during my degree , did writing as well as assisting in television production,  and the fashion industry. Being  a fashion assistant took off the most and before i knew it i was a stylist and Fashion Editor.

2.  How would you define your personal style?
I would like to say I'm more interested in having a sense of style than being fashionable. i find 'fashionable' one of the most uninspiring ideas ever. I think coming from such a heavy art back ground the idea of fashion has never really pushed my buttons. for me i see styling as a medium in which to create a bigger picture, a fantasy world and a sense of escapism.

3. Can you describe what you’re wearing at the moment?
I am wearing Viktor and Rolf boots, Kokon to Zai leggings, a t shirt by Long Clothing and a hooded sweatshirt/ cape by 'I Am Generic' ...all black.

4.  Which items should a women splurge on and which ones should she save on?
Definitely splurge on shoes, a handbag and a coat. As these are items you use day in day out. They become your signature and you bond with those items. So it needs to be something long lasting which you love. Um i would save on.....um.....um......

5. Ever get a style question that has totally stumped you? What was it?
Yeah, what not to splash out on wardrobe wise... hold on! tights, don't bother wasting money on plain black tights. though i love Falke tights....so ...um....

6. Who are your style icons?
Eurgh i hate this question too.i like to see people as inspiration and certainly not icons, but my grandad was a pretty rad dresser. he taught me never to  have your sleeves too long and always dress for business. he always wore a hat and a tie and was a very successful man.

7. What's the best fashion advice you've ever gotten and who was it from?
My grandad for sure, not sure if it was his line but he told me....  His phrase was 'if you wanna get ahead get a hat and if you gonna get a hat get a head...' Smart words.

8. What three must have items do you think every woman should have in her closet?
A fierce pair of black wedges... comfortable and make your legs look super long when your wear those cheap black tights. it doesn't matter if the ladder easily...as that's hot right now ;) A Kokon to Zai dress. As guaranteed it will be a conversation starter. A Kigu... i have an all in one tiger romper suit... because clothes are just clothes and are made to make you happy.

9. What are some important fashion rules that all men should live by?
Don't try too hard.its just not hot.

10. Can you give some good style tips on dressing for the holiday season?
yes its has to have either a tree/raindeer/tisel on it.... preferably knitted.

If you have any burning style questions that you want Alexis to answer please send in your comments and she'll  be very happy to answer!

Men’s Holiday Gift Idea: i-Pad Suit

Mohan's Custom Tailors based out of NYC has a suit customization option for the i-Pad lovin’ business man. They’ve created a custom pocket in their tailored suits to seamlessly fit in the i-Pad. The suit retails for around $600 and looks very well done in the sense that you won’t look like you have a bulky object protruding from you. The suit pocket seems like it protects the i-Pad very well and overall it looks just like a normal suit. This would make a great holiday gift for the every day business man who’s constantly running in and out of meetings.
When asked why they’ve chosen to make such a suit in the first place Mohan’s responded with "the suit was made as a result of customer requests.” This is a great example of how the clothing industry is meeting the needs of the ever evolving technology industry.

What do you guys think of a line of i-Pad friendly winter coats next?

Designer Of The Day: Alice Ritter

Designer Bio:
It was as a young girl playing dress up in heirloom corsets and dresses from the 19th century that were found in her grandparents' attic and her fascination with all the French designers that were featured in Vogue from Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent to Balmain, that initially captivated her to the craft – even before she knew how to craft!  At the tender age of nine, she was already trying to sketch the Saharienne dress from YSL and discovered that it was not “un exercice facile”! Fortunately, none of this daunted her passion for fashion and after moving to NY, she plunked down and bought a sewing machine, ripped apart some vintage pieces just to see how pants were made or how a sleeve looked lying flat on tracing paper. It was through this process that she taught herself the art of pattern making. With patience and determination, soon some of her pieces landed in a local Brooklyn boutique called Isa and sold out within a week!  This got her design juices flowing and and she is now living out her dream as a fashion designer.
In many ways, Alice Ritter's life practically changed overnight when she moved to New York from her home in Paris over nine years ago. A former music publicist in France, she followed her American boyfriend to New York, got married and legally changed her last name to that of her husband's. Being in New York gave her a sense of freedom to follow her childhood dream and afforded her a new raison d'être.
Ritter's signature style in her own words would be "French Girl in New York" or "French Romantic meets Annie Hall." She's attracted to femininity with a certain masculine edge and finds nothing sexier than a "woman who assumes being a little masculine as well." She incorporates this sensibility in all the tailored pieces, jackets, and crisp white shirts that are staples in her collection that combine the romantic soft lines with a bit of the tough Parisian girl finesse.  Ritter understands that designing starts with what her personal needs as a woman dictates. All her pieces reveal a little bit of herself in them. She's always trying to design what she terms as "the perfect uniform"- or the ideal outfit that will take her from day into night seamlessly and one that she would feel comfortable wearing endlessly. "I honestly ask myself if I would be wearing what I design – and I do! It's the best way to find out what works or not."

Alice Ritter was featured on CW TV's Fashion Forward: Making It! as an up-coming fashion star who is working at The Incubator, a special program created by the Council of Fashion Designers of America to foster emerging young designers.
Check out a preview of the show below.

1. What inspired you to get into fashion design?
I've always had an interest in fashion, dressing up as a kid, obsessing over french vogue, wallpapering my bedroom with chanel catalogs and pix of Ines de la Fressange!!! I've always been interested in art in general, I played and still do play piano, I've done ballet when I was younger, I wanted to be a writer at 1 point.... so many interests. But it took me a while to realize that designing was the way to unite all those, that and moving to NYC 12 years ago with my husband who as an artist is a big influence as well!!

2. Where did you go to school and what was your major?
I studied Economics in college!!!!!!! I have a master from a university in Paris. Don't ask, I was trying to please my parents.... interesting study not my calling obviously!!I learn clothes by reaping vintage apart!

3. Describe your philosophy about fashion?
Fashion has to reflect who you are , so do not give into too much trends, find what's fit you. I like subtle elegance, not overly put together. I also really want what I wear to have a certain level of comfort and softness, qualities that reflect a modern women...I'm not a huge fan of the 5 inches ( 12 cm and more) heels... not very practical when you work, walk, commute, run after your kids or want to dance all night!!!!

4. What words of wisdom can you give to aspiring designers?
Stick to your vision, it's the hardest thing to do, but it's the only thing to do.

5. Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?
everywhere! music, films ( big source!!), new york subway, girls on the streets in paris..... BLOGS!!!! I love blogs!

6. What is a typical day for a fashion designer like yourself?
waking up early, walking my dog with the best latte and brioche in hand from the bakery downstairs, office, depending of the day I can spend hours alone drawing!!! most often at night I try to get back to my husband. Family life is very important for me! We all need balance and it cannot be about work 100% of the time, even though it feels like it sometimes!

7. Which fashion designers have been important points of reference for you?
many! YSL, Albert Elbaz, Isabel Marant. In the states I really like Marc Jacob, still so good!!, I admire Rag and bone and often wants to wear their design, newly cfda winner Billy Reid and my friend and inspiration Sophie Theallet!

8. If you had the opportunity to design an outfit for one person who would it be?
Sophia Coppola, charlotte gainsbourg....style icons for me!!!

9. Can you tell me about your collection?
My collection is my story. A french girl who followed a dream and a boy in NYC. It has the french basics classic pieces infused with the NYC free spirit. I  live in brooklyn, williamsburg a very stylish part of NY. Big influence obviously!

10. Where can we find your collection?
Barneys.com, bloomingdales.com, lesnouvelles.com.... more to come I hope!!

Gravity Defying 9 Inch Platforms by Noritaka Tatehana

Noritaka Tatehana’s shoes are taking the fashion industry by storm. The Japanese designer behind the notorious 9 inch platforms has become quite the shoe celebrity after the gravity defying stunners were spotted on music queen Lady Gaga.

It appears as though sky high shoes are beginning to look like the future of fashion with fellow designers like the late Alexander McQueen designing the 10 inch Armadillo shoes. I can really see this trend taking off in the mass market if the price point changes to something more affordable. The current price for a pair of Noritaka Tatehana shoes ranges from $2,500-$6,500. While pocket change for celebrities like Lady Gaga these pricey creations are something most of us can only dream of owning. I would love to see Noritaka Tatehana do a similar but affordable line of these shoes for Payless since other high end designers like Christian Siriano and Alice + Olivia have seen tremendous success in catering similar versions of their designs to mass market fashion consumers.

Diane Davis the editor of Stylelist.com put a brave foot forward and spent the day walking in Noritaka Tatehana's 9 inch shoes. Check out her experience below!

Designer Of The Day: May Heggy

Designer Bio:
I am May Heggy, 24, An Egyptian Jewelry Designer, I have a passion for
designing, nature and different cultures.

I studied in the American University in Cairo and took jewelry courses in London's Central Saint Martins.
I started my jewelry line two years ago and my jewelry was featured in several television programs (including the German National Channel ZDF) as well as magazine and newspaper interviews (including The Herald Tribune).
As a child I loved crafts and I used to do my own accessories when I was a
teenager and always dreamt of having my own line and having an influence over the fashion industry.
I grew in a house that appreciates art and my father is an art collector. I am very proud that my jewelry is displayed in one of Cairo's most prestigious shops, "Mounaya Gallery", that Christian Louboutin mentioned in Harper's Bazaar as one of his favorites.

1. What inspired you to get into accessories design?
I've always had a passion for designing and art and I love accessories.Accessories are very important in any wardrobe. Since I was a child I liked to do my own accessories. You can transform any plain dress with a statement necklace. I am very interested in different cultures , ethnic arts and nature. I find it very inspiring the way Vera Wang modernized Japanese art. So jewelry designing was for me the thing that combines all my interests together.

2. Where did you go to school and what was your major?
I went to the American University in Cairo, My major was integrated marketing and my minor was psychology. Then I took jewelry design courses London's Central Saint Martins.

3. Describe your philosophy about fashion?
I believe that fashion is an individual experience that reflects a person's approaches, ideas and interests. It is a non-verbal way of communicating with others. Everyone should develop their own unique style that enhances natural beauty. Personally I love ethnic jewelry, attention to details. I love whatever is different and unique.

4. What words of wisdom can you give to aspiring designers?
Do what you like to do not what you expect other to like. Be different and dare to do new designs. Designers create fashion, they don't follow it.

5. Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?
Because of my interest in ethnic jewelry, my designs have an oriental spirit and my main inspirations are  nature, cultures and Islamic art. Whether it is a Persian rug or and Indian piece of jewelry, the attention to details in Islamic art has an enormous influence over my designs. Since I am Egyptian I like that my designs would reflect my culture and origins while maintaining a sleek and contemporary  approach. I go to museum for inspirations. Victoria and Albert is one of favorites for its wide range of varieties. Tribal tools, daily utensils, jewelry, rugs and ethnic clothing in eras such as Mughal and Mamluki are very inspiring as well as places like Uzbekistan, Turkey,  India and definitely egypt(since we have a beautiful variety of influences on art from mamluki, fatimid and ottoman eras in Egypt).

6. What is a typical day for an accessories designer like yourself?
I spend a lot of time working on my designs. The majority of my jewelry is hand made by myself and I get things done in a workshop as well. So I spend the majority of my time working on the Jewelry and making new pieces. I also read a lot of fashion magazines and I love socializing.

7. Which accessories designers have been important points of reference for you?
  • John Galliano
  • Isharya
  • Lara Bohinc
  • Carolina Bucci

8. If you had the opportunity to design an accessory for one person who would it be?
Kate Middleton

9. Can you tell me about your collection?
My new collection has some Bedouin inspiration. Also I made a lot of bracelets with the "Hamsa" charm and included alot of knitting and mixed media. I wanted to mix precious and non-precious materials as well.

10. Where can we find your collection?
Please Check my facebook group to be updated.
and add my jewelry account on Facebook
For the moment I mainly sell my jewelry in Egypt thought shops and individual orders but hope to display my jewelry in London soon.
